The soil of the Alto Paraguay Chaco is a plain that does not exceed 300 meters above sea level. The land is low, prone to flooding, and with a large extension of forests. Prolonged droughts followed by torrential rains are a feature distinctive of the area. In the north, towards the border with Bolivia, it has elevations as it penetrates towards the northwest, where the soils are very different to the typical Chaco area. It has good pastures for cattle and fertile land for agriculture. The soil is a vast plain with inclinations towards the Lower Chaco region and the coast of the Paraguay River, the climate is distinctly tropical. The main economic area of this zone is livestock, which still represents 90% of the economy of the Upper Paraguay.
