| Department of General Pedernera, Province of San Luis, Argentina. | | LOCATION | Department of General Pedernera, Province of San Luis, Argentina. The establishment is located in the region called \"la Travesía Puntana,” on Provincial Route N° 12, about 115 km straight south from the capital city of San Luis (71 miles), and about 92 km south-south west of Villa Mercedes (57 miles). From the entrance to the establishment on said road, the Provincial Route 55 (former National Route 148) is at 28 km (17 miles) while Provincial Highway No. 3 is located at 18 km (11 miles), and Provincial Route N ° 27 at 18 km (11 miles). | | SIZE | 21,568 hectares (53,295 acres) | | DESCRIPTION | BUILDING IMPROVEMENTS: Posts \"San Benito\" and \"El Central\", each have accommodation for a typical family dwelling, with built in bathroom, kitchen, two bedrooms and other facilities. In \"San Benito\" there is also a matera (maté-drinking place) with two rooms and toilet. Electricity is supplied by the same electric generator of the electric pump. In \"El Central\" the power is supplied by solar screens, and gas is supplied with large gas bottles. In addition, each borehole has a small material hut with sheet roof for the protection of motor/generators. The 5 E.M motor box was incorporated as a matera. The \"Maria Angelica\" post is a nucleus comprising a shed (and house with two bedrooms, kitchen and bathroom), generator group room, duplex house with kitchen/dining room, two bedrooms and bathroom in each unit. \"Margam\" post: has three rooms, kitchen/dining room and bathroom, motor-generator stall. \"Bajo de las Carretas\" has matera with attached bathroom and motor-generator stall. \"La Penca\" with motor-generator and stall. WIRE FENCES: The level of divisions of the establishment is hard to find in areas of these characteristics. The wire fences are not older than 13 years, so the condition for use is optimal. Details of the fencing: Type Length Limit wires 90,570 m (56.2 miles) External (on routes) 11,830 m (7.4 miles) Traditional Internal 91,920 m (57.2miles) 2 Wire Electric 4928 m (3.0 miles) 1 wire electric 57,695 m (35.8 miles) WORKING IMPROVEMENTS: There are five facilities for working with cattle, in excellent conditions. Two of them have six pens (two waiting pens, pre-and round corral, chute and four separating pens.) WATER RESOURCES: In the current scheme, the main source of water is the Western Provincial Aqueduct, Stretch V (Buena Esperanza Branch), which ends just in the field, at the post called \"Maria Angelica.\" There are two intakes from this aqueduct, with which are filled two main tanks (one of them with 750,000 liters capacity) (26,500 cu.ft.), and from them, secondary tanks and troughs, but in any event the drilled wells of the estancia remain in usable condition. The establishment has 15 Australian tanks between 200 and 500 cu.m., 24 linear troughs, with between 4 to 8 sections each and 5 wells, with four electric pumps with 2 and 3 HP Dursley motors, and flows between 600 and 2500 liters/hr (21 and 88 cu.ft./hr). The location of pumps is: PLACE PUMP DEPTH WATER DEPTH PUMP San Sebastian 90 m (295 ft) 78 m (256 ft) 2HP El Central 87 m (285 ft) 78 m (256 ft) 2HP San Benito 102/104 m (335/341 ft) 70 m (230 ft) 2HP La Torre 84 m (275 ft) 76 m (249 ft) 4HP El Martillo PUMP REMOVED The distribution by aqueducts involved the construction of 87,820 m (288,221 ft) of polyethylene pipe with diameters from 110 to 25 mm (4” to 1”), at about 60 cm deep on average (24”). In addition, there were added a total of 16 round drinking troughs, 8 meters diameter (26 ft), 60 cm height(24”), 30 000 liters capacity(7,925 gal.), 2-meter sidewalk (7 ft) built in situ with cast concrete, which are complemented by seven traditional troughs. In \"Maria Angelica\" and \"La Penca\" there are two motor generators with electric pumps and in \"Bajo de las Carretas\" and \"La Penca\" two windmills to use for emergencies and human consumption. FORAGE RESOURCES: The establishment is located in the region of Psamophilic Grassland with natural species of high nutritional value for summer, with predominance of Sorgastrum pelitum. This resource, with unusable inter annual herbage accumulation, favored high risk of wildfire conditions, so common in this region. Beginning in 1998, and as a corollary of the results of the introduction gardens of species both at Inta Villa Mercedes, and in the establishment itself, were incorporated mega thermal species of South African origin, such as Digitaria eriantha CV. Irene, and Eragrostis curvula CV. Ermelo, with high adaptation in the region, and gross productivity values close to 2450 kg/ha for the first type and 1700 kg/ha for the second (always, without fertilization) (2,185 and 1,517 lb/acre). This incorporation had several objectives: a-Keeping a cattle diet quality throughout the year (for these species and the greater availability of resources of native species with autumn-winter growth). b-To reach coverage levels sufficient to prevent wind or water erosion, but without excesses, to reduce the risk of fires. Both species complement themselves through the production cycle, with spring - autumn uses for weeping lovegrass and winter-summer for Digitaria. In distribution plans can also be observed substantial \"forest\" and \"natural\" areas. These resources are considered of high value, as they allow winter use with species of high nutritional value for cow breeding, such as Poa sp., Bromus sp. Piptochaetium sp., and in summer with Sorgastrum sp. The total areas of forage resources are: RESOURCE AREA Digitaria 8,869 ha.(21,915 acres) Weeping lovegrass 5,714 ha (14,120 acres) Natural 3,693 ha.(9,125 acres) Forest 1,814 ha.(4,482 acres) Agriculture 1,478 ha.(3652 acres) Total 21,568 ha.(60,768 acres) AGRICULTURAL RESOURCES: To choose the paddocks where the agriculture is located today, there were taken into account three factors: Lots with incorporated pastures, with low stand of plants (4 and 4 CE). Lots with incorporated pastures with over-proportion within the plan (26 and 27 CE) Lots with agricultural history, without recovery of the natural forage. Here is the history of the lots under direct seeding:: Years PADDOCK HA ACRES PREDECESSOR 07/08 08/09 09/10 12 C.E. 114 282 Agriculture Rye Corn Corn 13 C.E. 113 279 Agriculture Rye Corn Corn 14 C.E. 207 512 Agriculture Rye Corn Corn 4 C.E. 235 581 Degraded. It is planned for the 10/11 season the incorporation of other agricultural species, to start a rotation system. | | APTITUDE | The establishment is considered a cattle breeding ranch, suitable for breeding and rearing, and farming in \"marginal\" areas It has evolved in recent years accompanying the emerging agricultural activity in the region, using for this purpose paddocks that have previous antecedents (before 1999), but with less application of technology. So far, results have been promising, taking into account the environmental conditions in which the activity is developed. This activity, under the system of permanent direct tillage without stubble grazing, opens new possibilities for sustainability of the breeding and rearing system, as it allows to incorporate into the bovine diet resources that not long ago required to be purchased or transferred from other establishments. The field also had in recent years a significant increase in stocking rate due to the significant increase in the availability of resources, increasing from loads of near 10/12 ha per cow to the current 5.2 ha/cow. (25/30 to 12.9 acre/cow) To achieve this, it was necessary to incorporate mega thermal species (Digitaria and weeping lovegrass) and the development of a watering system, which will be briefly discussed. |
