| PUELÉN, province of LA PAMPA | | LOCATION | PUELÉN, province of LA PAMPA 30 km east of route 151 (kilometerstone 247) and 300 km straight west of Santa Rosa, capital city of the province of La Pampa, by provincial Route 14. | | SIZE | 13600 ha (33606 acres) | | DESCRIPTION | New main house with 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, large dining-living room and gallery, staff quarter. New house for puesteros (farmhand that looks out for a section of the field) -almost finished-. 8.600 are wired. The perimetral wire fence is new, fireproof (protected against fire), with 5 wires, calden-wood and iron posts, tecmetal iron strings. The field has all the necessary picadas (Narrow pathways opened through the brush) -more than 200 km-, as well as backfires and protection lots for the cattle in case of necessity. 4 paddocks (with wire fences) 2 new windmills with water at 5m depth; 1 of them draws water from an underground river thus making water supply practically limitless –last summer 1,500 head of cattle were supplied without problem- and of good quality. One 120.000 liter australian tank (31,700 gallons) with a material (double) drinking trough 10 m long (for 10,000 liters) (2,650 gal). A second tank (capacity 70,000 liters ) with its trough is currently being built, scarcely 2,000 m from the former, as well as a third material tank with capacity for 50,000 liters. The Atuel River crosses the field in NE-SE direction along 20 km, with plentiful fresh water of good quality for cattle, and a lagoon formed by this river of approximately 600 ha (1,480 acres), with abundant wildlife: wild boars, pumas, ñandues, guanacos, ostrichs, etc.. Chute, loader and complete new corrals, of quebracho and anchico, with a working capacity of more than 1,500 head of cattle. | | APTITUDE | Cattle field for 1,800 cows –breeding and raising- (if the field is further subdivided, the receptivity can be increased). The calving index was in the order of 75/85% and the weaning had a similar figure. Field free of parasites and of endemic illnesses. It is a soft, sandy field with neither basalt or gravel. It is covered by intermediate and tall brushwood: Mesquite (Alpataco, Prosopis alpataco), locust (Prosopis spp.), caldén (Prosopis caldenis), chañar (Geoffroea decorticans), elm, etc., and the most abundant natural grasses are flechilla crespa (Aristida mendocina), flechilla criolla (Aristida spp.), unquillo (Poa ligularis) and tupe (Paspalum racemosus). Annual rainfall: 600-700 mm (though the average of 2003-2006 fairly surpassed 800 mm). Recent INTA surveys have shown that the annual rainfall amount tends to increase significantly decade after decade. Soil studies carried out to explore the agriculture feasibility have been very positive regarding the sowing of sunflower. |
